Jockey Club brings “floral joy” to the city at the Hong Kong Flower Show

15/03/2024 12:15

The ever-popular Hong Kong Flower Show opened today at Victoria Park, bringing a welcome touch of colour to the city. With the theme “Floral Joy Around Town”, featuring the colourful Angelonia as the theme flower, this year’s show, organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will run until 24 March. Once again, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is delighted to be a major sponsor, the twelfth consecutive year of support for this celebration of spring through its Charities Trust.

Joining the opening ceremony today (15 March) were Janet Lee, wife of the HKSAR Chief Executive; Andrew Leung, President of the Legislative Council of the HKSAR; Kevin Yeung, HKSAR Government Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism; Anita Fung, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Vincent Liu, HKSAR Government Director of Leisure and Cultural Services.

As always, the Club is supporting a series of activities to help the community enjoy the flower show as well as to promote environmental awareness and nature appreciation, especially among young people.

Leading up to the opening, students took part in the Jockey Club Mosaiculture Display by Students, weaving together flowers and plants to create a floral display matching this year’s theme. During the show, the Jockey Club Student Drawing Competition will see children from kindergartens, primary and secondary schools demonstrate their talent by drawing some of the most eye-catching flowers and displays. Winning entries will be exhibited at the show.

The Club is also encouraging students to develop their own “green fingers” through the One Person One Flower Scheme, which is distributing plant seedlings to schools, while after the show students will help pot recyclable plants as part of the “Give the Flowers a New Home!” Jockey Club Flower Re-planting Scheme.

For young families, there will be opportunities to engage with nature in the Jockey Club Community Green Playground. Employee members of the Club’s CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team will be on hand to help out and to promote green messages.

To ensure as many people as possible can enjoy the beauty of the floral displays, transport subsidies and guided tours will be provided by the Jockey Club HK Flower Show Guided Tour to senior citizens, students and disadvantaged families throughout the show period.

The Club’s support for the Hong Kong Flower Show, like all its charity donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and wagering generate employment, tax and charity support for the community.
