Ever since its foundation as a horse racing and riding club in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has played a major role in the development of equestrian sports.

The Club established public riding schools in Hong Kong in the 1970s, while since the 1980s it has been donating horses to equestrian sports teams in the Mainland.

A major landmark were the equestrian events of the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which were held in Hong Kong with Club support. Following their success, the Club assisted with the 2010 Asian Games equestrian events and as a legacy constructed Conghua Racecourse on the site. The Club was also pleased to provide technical support for the equestrian events of the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.

To develop the potential of Hong Kong’s most talented riders, the Club established the HKJC Equestrian Team in 2008. The Hong Kong Equestrian Performance Plan, launched in 2016, is further supporting the development of senior riders, while The HKJC Youth Equestrian Development Programme focuses on developing a pipeline of young talent. In 2022, the Club expanded the Youth Equestrian Development Programme with the addition of a Mainland Squad, which supports young talented Hong Kong athletes who are based full time in the Mainland.

Several members of the HKJC Equestrian Team have won medals in national and international competitions, notably Hong Kong, China’s first ever Asian Games equestrian gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games and five medals at the inaugural FEI Asian Championships. Thanks to the efforts of Club-supported riders, Hong Kong, China also sent its largest ever equestrian and para equestrian team to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. Club-supported riders were also prominent in the Hong Kong, China team participating in the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
