Jockey Club sponsors Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme as Hong Kong, China prepares to cheer on its athletes at Hangzhou Asian Games

25/07/2023 19:11

The Hong Kong Jockey Club today (25 July) announced its continued support for the Hong Kong Sports Institute (“HKSI”) by sponsoring the Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme (“JCAIAS”). This sponsorship, which extends the Club’s support for the JCAIAS for three years, comes as local elite athletes gear up to compete in this year’s Asian Games in Hangzhou, as well as FISU World University Games in Chengdu.

The JCAIAS aims to support the all-round development of local athletes by providing cash incentives to recognise those who earn distinction for Hong Kong by winning gold, silver or bronze medals in top-level competitions. The scheme covers seven major sporting events: the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games, Asian Para Games, National Games, National Para Games and FISU World University Games. Cash rewards will also be awarded to athletes finishing in fourth to eighth places in the Olympics and Paralympics in recognition of their achievements.

“The Club’s sponsorship of the Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme reflects its wide-ranging support for the Sports Institute and elite athletes. Through our support we also want to recognise the huge effort and dedication of our best athletes,” said the Club’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges. “To promote a healthier and more vibrant society with positive attitudes and values, the Club has also keenly supported the building of sporting infrastructure as well as the professional development of Hong Kong athletes, so they can compete on the global stage. We wish all our athletes great success in the Hangzhou Asian Games and Chengdu FISU World University Games and hope they can benefit from the awards scheme.”

The Club is a long-standing supporter of sports development in Hong Kong. Over the years, the Club has promoted sports at both the community and elite levels through numerous initiatives, enabling people of all ages and abilities to enjoy sports.

Funded jointly by the Club and the Government, the HKSI (then called the Jubilee Sports Centre) opened in 1982. In 1992, the Club’s Charities Trust provided an endowment of HK$200 million to establish a trust fund, now called the Hong Kong Jockey Club Elite Athletes Fund, to support top athletes’ training, education and career development. In 2021, to boost research and development in elite sports for a period of three years, the Club pledged HK$150 million in funding to match the Hong Kong SAR Government’s HK$150 million grant.

Additionally, as one of the largest equine organisations in the world, the Club has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Games organising committee to provide technical support for the equestrian events of the Hangzhou Asian Games. This is in line with the Club’s overall promotion of sports development.
