02/04/2011

New Territories residents can soon enjoy a range of new communal facilities at a new Heung Yee Kuk building in Sha Tin, constructed with a HK$41.74 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Today (2 April), Club Steward Dr Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai joined HKSAR Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang, Deputy Director of the Central Government's Liaison Office Zhou Junming, Heung Yee Kuk Chairman Lau Wong-fat and other guests to officiate at the move-in ceremony of the new building.

Dr Fan noted that Heung Yee Kuk had helped maintain the traditional culture and lifestyle of the New Territories over the years.  “The communal facilities will be accessible to the public and will be operated in a non-profit mode, staging Cantonese Opera and other recreational activities.  Exhibitions and other events will also be held here to help the public learn more about the history and development of the New Territories.”

Mr Lau thanked the Club for its generous support, “The design of the multi-purpose complex had adopted the theme of preserving traditions and embracing the future and help serve the community and promote Chinese culture and arts, as well as maintain the spirit of the clans.  I hope it will gradually become a cultural landmark in the New Territories,” he said.

The three-storey Heung Yee Kuk New Territories Building is located at Shek Mun, Sha Tin.  The Club-funded communal facilities include a 1200-seat performance and assembly hall to stage public performances, which will help meet the growing demand for performing arts venues in the city.  The outstanding construction work is expected to be completed in mid 2011.
