Jockey Club provides first endovascular operation centre in HK

02/04/2011

With an ageing population often requiring surgery for vascular problems, there is an increasing demand for micro endovascular surgery. Now Hong Kong has its first dedicated endovascular and minimal access operation centre supported by an endovascular simulation and skill centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, thanks to a HK$39.95 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

The two centres were officially opened today (2 April) by Jockey Club Steward Dr Donald K T Li, Secretary for Food and Health Dr York Chow, Hospital Authority Chairman Anthony Wu,  Queen Elizabeth Hospital Governing Committee Chairman John Lee and Kowloon Central Cluster Chief Executive / QEH Chief Executive Dr Hung Chi-tim.

Dr Li said the Jockey Club has been a staunch supporter of medical development in Hong Kong. Over the past decade, the Club’s Charities Trust has contributed over HK$2.28 billion for the medical and health sector, and also worked closely with the Government and other organisations in developing local medical services. Through the Trust’s donations, the Club seeks to promote basic health services, improve medical facilities by providing the latest innovative technology and training facilities for medical officers, as well as to conduct various research projects to discover new methods to treat and prevent diseases.

“Our donation to Queen Elizabeth Hospital to set up this first endovascular and minimal access operation centre in Hong Kong, which provides more effective treatment to patients with vascular diseases and acute polytrauma, can benefit more people in need. The centre also marks a new milestone in local medical services,” he noted.

Mr Wu expressed his gratitude to the Trust’s donation.  “The elderly makes up of more than half of the Kowloon Central Cluster’s inpatient population.  The Jockey Club Endovascular and Minimal Access Operation Centre will help meet the rising demand of elderly patients with endovascular diseases.”

Located in Block D of the hospital, the Jockey Club Endovascular & Minimal Access Operation Centre is equipped with innovative facilities including Biplane Digital Subtraction Angiography Machine and the moniter can display 3-dimensional reconstruction images. The recently-renovated operation centre adopts minimally invasive procedures, which can effectively lower the patient’s fatality rate, as well as help shorten their hospital stay and recovery period. In addition, the Jockey Club Endovascular Simulation and Skills Centre in Block F enables the hospital to train about 40 to 50 doctors a year.
