Jockey Club supports international a cappella festival to foster young people's creativity

27/03/2011

As a staunch supporter of innovative youth activities, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has worked closely with The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) for almost half a century, most recently sponsoring the Hong Kong 2011 International a cappella Festival organised by HKFYG.

Jockey Club Steward Anthony Chow joined HKFYG Executive Director Dr Rosanna Wong, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Raymond Young, Commissioner for Tourism Philip Yung, Hong Kong Arts Development Council Chairman Wilfred Wong and other guests at the opening concert on 26 March.

Mr Chow said, “We are honoured to be the major sponsor for the International a cappella Festival. This meaningful event not only provides an innovative and entertaining platform for young people, it can also inspire youthful talents and nurture creativity.”

Dr Wong thanked the Club for its generous support of youth and arts development throughout the years, which helped make such an exciting singing festival possible. She said Hong Kong was privileged to hear such world-renowned a cappella groups and singers, who rely solely on pure, clear and clean vocal talents unaccompanied by any instrumentation. “This has proven to be very popular both with general as well as youth audiences,” she added.

The two-month event features celebrated local and overseas performers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Sweden, including Vybration, SOLZICK and Chet Lam. The performers will also help local schools to nurture young talent through workshops, lectures and exchanges. About 3,000 secondary school students, teachers and members of the public will join the “2011 International a cappella Festival” Opening Concert.

Over the years, the Club has funded many HKFYG projects, including the building and redevelopment of the Jockey Club Sai Kung Outdoor Training Camp; modernisation of more than ten Youth S.P.O.Ts, establishment of the Leading through Engineering, Art and Design (LEAD) Project; and the launch of the Youth Volunteer Network (VNET).
