Third FAMILY Symposium to promote social harmony in community

06/12/2010

Family is the base of every society, and harmonious society is built upon loving family relationships.  Towards that end, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and its FAMILY project partner, the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), today (6 December) held their third annual symposium to discuss how to use a community-based participatory approach to build a harmonious society.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Steward Anthony W K Chow, Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs Ms Grace Lui and The University of Hong Kong Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost Professor Roland T Chin attended the opening ceremony of the symposium.

Mr Chow noted the rapid development in Hong Kong in the past few decades have given rise to many family discord cases. As the city’s largest community benefactor, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is strongly committed to promoting a harmonious society. “This Trust-initiated FAMILY Project is upstream, multi-disciplinary, educational and preventive. It targets the root of the problems rather than rectifying them.”

Two internationally renowned experts from the United States, Professor Meredith Minkler from the School of Public Health of University of California, Berkeley and Dr Vish Viswanath from Harvard School of Public Health shared their overseas experience with the participants.

During the symposium, FAMILY Project Principal Investigator Professor T H Lam revealed how to use randomised controlled trials in community settings for effective evaluation, while FAMILY Project Co-Investigator Professor Sophia Chan explained how to use a community-based participatory approach in promoting family 3Hs – Health, Happiness and Harmony. Government and NGO representatives from Shamshuipo, Yuen Long and Kwun Tong held a sharing session followed by a panel discussion to collect views on how to promote family 3Hs in the community.

Separate workshops, on 4 and 7 December, are being held to provide professionals from the social service sector with an opportunity to interact with local and overseas speakers on the formulation of effective evidence-based intervention programmes.

FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society is a citywide project launched by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with HK$250 million funding, in collaboration with the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong.  The project aims to identify the sources of family problems, devise suitable preventive measures and promote the “3Hs” through a citywide household survey, intervention projects and public education programmes.  Further details of FAMILY are available at www.family.org.hk/.
