Club's donation help redevelop Siu Tong Camp with more green facilities

23 April 2009

With a donation of some HK$15 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club through its Charities Trust, Caritas - Hong Kong has redeveloped the Caritas Jockey Club Siu Tong Camp at Lai Chi Chong, Tolo Harbour and enhanced its facilities to meet growing demand for camping.  The refurbished camp site was officially opened today (23 April).

Since 1981, the Club has donated over HK$60 million to Caritas to support redevelopment and enhancement projects at its four camp sites, the other three of which (Caritas Jockey Club Ming Fai Camp, Caritas Oi Fai Camp and Caritas Ka Fai House) are all located in Cheung Chau.  The camp sites provide quality recreational services and a wide range of activities to help release campers from the pressures of their daily lives.  They are also beneficial to the all-round development of young people by unleashing their potential and developing their self-confidence in a challenging natural environment.

The Caritas Jockey Club Siu Tong Camp started operations in 1969.  As part of its redevelopment, a number of green measures have been adopted including green balconies on each dormitory to provide plenty of natural light, and solar energy devices for water heating.  The camp also provides various ecological activities for participants, such as herbage walks, organic agriculture and mangrove visits.  A 16-inch diameter catadioptric telescope has been installed in its observatory building so that campers can enjoy stargazing.  They can also learn more about astronomy by participating in seminars jointly organised with the Hong Kong Astronomical Society.
