Club's donation helps create a safe and comfortable environment for disabled students

8 April 2009

Disabled students at the Hong Kong Red Cross Princess Alexandra School in Lam Tin can now live and study in a safer and more comfortable environment, following reconstruction of the boarding section made possible by a donation of some HK$42 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club through its Charities Trust. Club Steward Stephen Ip joined Deputy Chairman of Hong Kong Red Cross Patricia Ling at an opening ceremony for the new facility today (8 April).

Mr Ip stressed that the Club, as a major charitable organisation in Hong Kong, had made a strong commitment to the betterment of society. Despite the current financial situation, the Club intended to stand by its charitable and community commitments as this was the time when society needed the Club's support most. "There is no doubt that everyone, not least people with disabilities, should have equal opportunities to develop their talents and potential," he commented. "This donation demonstrates our concern for disabled students in the school's boarding section, who previously had to live in dilapidated facilities with poor fittings and inadequate space for movement."

The new boarding section has been expanded in floor area from 1,823 to 3,100 square metres, providing a more spacious environment for students to move around, especially the wheelchair-bound. It is also equipped with improved toilet facilities, as well as an enlarged dining and multi-purpose hall, so that all the students can be accommodated together for dining and school functions. Other supporting facilities such as a gymnasium and warden's quarters have also been added. The refurbishments have been designed to create a home-like setting that provides a comfortable studying and living environment for the boarders. In recognition of the Club's donation, the School has named the new facility "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Boarding Section".

Over the years, the Club, through its Charities Trust, has made donations to many different projects that benefit people with disabilities and enhance their quality of life and care. A number of these projects, such as the Jockey Club Arts for the Disabled Scheme and the Inclusive Arts Studio at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre, have the aim of promoting harmony and integration between disabled and able-bodied people, as well as empowering disabled people of all ages to develop their creative and artistic potential.

Founded in 1962, the Hong Kong Red Cross Princess Alexandra School is the largest special school for physically disabled children in Hong Kong. It operates classes at both primary and secondary levels, housing 190 children aged between 6 and 20 who have physical and multiple handicaps. Its boarding capacity is 98. The School's alumni include Paralympic equestrian rider Nelson Yip, Paralympic Gold Medallist So Wa Wai and boccia world champion Leung Yuk Wing.
