Club's donation to Lingnan University promotes international exchanges in modern Chinese Literature

6 March 2009

With the aim of promoting the teaching and research of modern Chinese literature in Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, through its Charities Trust, has donated HK$2.32 million to establish a new visiting professorship at Lingnan University.  A public lecture was held at the University today (6 March) to launch The Hong Kong Jockey Club Distinguished Visiting Professorship of Modern Chinese Literature, which was delivered by the first distinguished scholar Prof Chen Sihe, Chair of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Fudan University in Shanghai.

Other officiating guests at today's launch ceremony included the Club's Executive Director, Charities, William Y Yiu; President of Lingnan University, Prof Chan Yuk-Shee, and Head of the Department of Chinese at Lingnan University, Prof Xu Zidong. Mr Yiu told the guests that with the increasing importance of China in the global arena, China studies had generated broader interest around the world. "As an East-meet-West vantage point, Hong Kong is an ideal place for internationally renowned scholars to gather and exchange views freely and openly on modern Chinese literary works," said Mr Yiu. He also encouraged students to broaden their horizons and acquire knowledge in Chinese literature through dialogue with outstanding scholars.

The Trust's donation provides for a world-renowned scholar in modern Chinese literature from Mainland China or overseas to be in residence at Lingnan University for one semester each year, for a five-year period starting from 2009. During his residence, the Visiting Professor will teach courses on Chinese literature that benefit both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He will also give lectures and conduct workshops for secondary school teachers and the public. It is hoped that all these activities will bring the creation, teaching and research of modern Chinese literature in Hong Kong to the next level.

Today's inaugural public lecture was given by Prof Chen on the topic of ''From Youthful Aspirations to Middle-Aged Crisis: A Perspective in the Study of 20th Century Chinese Literature''.
