HKJC Volunteer Team launches thematic workshops for Tin Shui Wai teenagers

19 October 2008

The Hong Kong Jockey Club's CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team has launched a new series of workshops for secondary students in Tin Shui Wai on the theme of "Antiquities and Monuments" with the assistance of the Antiquities and Monuments Office.  By participating in the heritage tours, young people can learn about the different districts of Hong Kong and broaden their horizons.

Forty secondary students took part in the pilot workshop "Knowing Hong Kong - Antiquities and Monuments" yesterday (18 October). It comprises four days of activities including the heritage trails in Central and Sheung Wan, Lung Yeuk Tau in Fanling, Ping Shan in Yuen Long and visit to the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui. In addition, all the participating students are required to prepare materials for group discussions facilitated by Club volunteers and make a presentation at the end of each session in order to foster their teamwork and self-confidence.

Mr Kim Mak, the Club's Executive Director, Corporate Developmentsaid, "We hope this initiative will enable the students to step outside of Tin Shui Wai and get to learn more about other areas of Hong Kong. Furthermore, we would like to arouse their interests in Hong Kong's history, as well as its antiquities and monuments."

Students participating in the first day's activities were enthusiastic about what they saw, and paid close attention to the briefing conducted by the staff of the Antiquities and Monuments Office. They also took part actively in the group discussions afterwards. Some of them commented that they had little chance to visit areas other than Tin Shui Wai and this was really a great opportunity for them to broaden their horizons. They also hoped to take part in volunteer work themselves after the completion of the workshop in November and serve the residents in their home district in return.

Ms Irene Chow, a registered social worker from Caritas Integrated Family Service Centre who assisted in the recruitment of the participants, praised the dedication of the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team which brought new initiatives to the Tin Shui Wai community. Mr Eddie Chan, Unit-in-charge of Hong Kong Young Women Christian Association Tin Hsui Wai Integrated Social Service Centre, said the workshop would enable the students to gain more knowledge outside of schools and believed that they would benefit a lot from the programme.

In preparation for the opening of the HKJC Telebet cum Volunteers and Training Centre in Tin Shui Wai in 2009, the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team will continue its community services focusing primarily on Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai areas, hoping to bring about more longer-term benefits to the community as a whole.
