Community participation sought to enrich Hong Kong's pioneering Olympic Museum

20 August 2008

The Hong Kong Olympic Museum will be established after the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to preserve the Olympic legacy and continue promoting Olympic ideals and sportsmanship in Hong Kong. With the aim of enriching the city's collective memory, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is now calling on the public to assist in donating collectable items.

There are two main themes for the targeted collections: Hong Kong as a co-host city of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Equestrian Events. The Club will welcome donations from corporations and the general public that relate to these themes and have commemorative value.

Donated items will be categorised and evaluated in accordance with their nature and the exhibition themes, and the most suitable chosen for display in the Hong Kong Olympic Museum. The Club will acknowledge those donors whose exhibits are displayed.

Suitable collection items can be submitted to The Hong Kong Racing Museum which is located on the second floor of the Happy Valley Stand at Happy Valley Racecourse on Wong Nai Chung Road (opposite the end of Queen's Road East). The Racing Museum is open from Tuesdays to Sundays and on most Public Holidays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. During day race meetings at Happy Valley, it opens from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm.

Under a Co-operation Agreement with the International Olympic Committee signed in April 2008, the Club will develop the Hong Kong Olympic Museum in Sha Tin. Preparation work for the Museum has begun in earnest and the Museum is expected to be completed within the next few years. Through its key themes of "Hong Kong as a co-host city of the Beijing 2008 Olympics", "Sports development in Hong Kong" and "Olympic spirit and sportsmanship", the Museum will uphold the city's sporting fever long after the Olympic Games are over.
