Statement - Beijing Hong Kong Jockey Club Clubhouse

2 July 2008

The Hong Kong Jockey Club today (2 July) made the following statement in response to a demonstration that took place outside the Beijing Hong Kong Jockey Club Clubhouse this morning:

GD Province Overseas Chinese Building & Decoration Co. (GD) was the main contractor for the fitting-out work in our Beijing Hong Kong Jockey Club Clubhouse.  The participants in this morning's demonstration were GD's sub-contractor and construction workers.  The demonstration was about payment arrangements between GD and its sub-contractor.  The Hong Kong Jockey Club itself is not a party to this issue.

The Club contacted GD upon learning of the demonstration.  As a result of the Club's mediation, GD representatives met the construction workers at the Beijing Clubhouse.  Having sympathy for the workers' situation, the Club arranged for the meeting to be held in the Beijing Clubhouse and provided the construction workers with lunch and drinks, even though the case is unrelated to the Club.

The Club has settled 98% of its contractual payments to GD.  The outstanding 2% will be settled upon mutual agreement between the Quantity Surveyors of the two parties on the actual spending.  It is factually incorrect to say that GD's outstanding salary payments result from the Club's outstanding payment to GD.
