HKJC funds establishment of Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre

30 May 2008

The launch ceremony was held today (30 May) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre, a new initiative to prepare Hong Kong for the hosting of major sporting events and provide effective back-up support for sports development and elite sports training in Hong Kong. The Centre has been established jointly by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU), with the support of a HK$88.72 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club, which will cover the Centre's set- up and operating costs for the first three years.

The Centre will offer professional support to top international sporting events including the forthcoming Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Equestrian Events, the 2009 East Asian Games in Hong Kong, and the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou. It will also provide clinical support, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement services to elite athletes from Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Officiating guests at today's launch were Secretary for Food and Health Dr the Hon York Chow, Club Chairman John C C Chan, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK Prof Lawrence J Lau, and President of HK PolyU Prof C K Poon.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre is a "virtual centre", equipped with upgraded and expanded clinics and laboratories funded by the Club, and supported by a team of sports scientists, sports physicians and allied health professionals from CUHK and HK PolyU, under 14 sports-related units of the two Universities. The Centre aims not only to promote sports to the general public, but also provide integrated sports medicine and health services to elite athletes and the public through evidence-based practice, research and professional training. Through this initiative, it is hoped that Hong Kong can develop as a leading hub in Asia for the advancement of sports medicine and health sciences.
