HKJC to host biggest-ever Mother's Day Carnival in Tin Shui Wai to promote communal harmony

5 May 2008

To promote the spirit of communal harmony, The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Yuen Long District Council will jointly host Tin Shui Wai's biggest-ever Mother's Day Carnival this coming Sunday, 11 May, under the motto of "Honour our Mothers, Welcome our Motherland's first Olympics".

Demonstrating the community's unity, 29 non-government organisations within the district have shown their support to the Club and will contribute by designing game stalls or staging performances during the event to celebrate Mother's Day with Tin Shui Wai residents.

To cheer on and support women and families in Tin Shui Wai, National People's Congress Standing Committee member and Legislative Council President Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai will join Club Chairman John CC Chan, Yuen Long District Council Chairman Leung Che-cheung and other officiating guests to perform the opening ceremony

In addition to the 30 game stalls and 16 different stage performances in themes either of the Olympics or family harmony, there will be a plentiful range of other entertainment including inflatable games - the all-time kids' favourite - various outdoor play activities and two DIY handicraft workshops where children can make instant Mother's Day gifts.  To enhance and strengthen family ties in the community on this special occasion, some of the games will require family members to accomplish tasks together.

Parents and children will also be able to learn more about the Beijing 2008 Games equestrian events being held in Hong Kong, through a special Equestrian Pavilion set up at the carnival.  As well as seeing displays of the equestrian venues and facilities visitors will have the chance to meet two of the Club's lovable Shetland ponies and have photos taken with them.

The Mother's Day Carnival is being organised by the Club's CARE@hkjc staff volunteer team as a further initiative under the team's plan to target its services at the Tin Shui Wai community this year following the Club's new drive to set up a new HKJC Telebet Centre cum Volunteers and Training Centre in Tin Shui Wai in 2009. The carnival follows a lunch gathering hosted for nearly 200 elderly single people living there as well as home visits to other elderly residents during the Chinese New Year.

The "Honour our Mothers, Welcome our Motherland's first Olympics" Carnival will be held at Tin Shui Wai Sports Ground on Mother's Day, Sunday 11 May, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  Admission is free.
