Club's Green equestrian venues play major role in ''Green Olympics'' 200-day Countdown

21 January 2008

Club Chairman, John C C Chan, together with Government officials, local elite athletes and representatives from the sports sector, attended the 200-day Countdown to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games at Ocean Park on 20 January 2008. Besides marking the 200 days reminding to the opening of the Olympic Games, the ceremony promoted the messages of environmental protection, as well as healthy living under the concept of "Green Olympics".

Before the ceremony, the Chairman made a wish for the success of the Beijing Olympics and hung card - complete with his wish - on the wishing tree.

In the countdown ceremony, Chief Secretary for Administration, Henry Tang Ying-yen acknowledged the Club's contribution in supporting the Olympic Equestrian Events in Hong Kong.  Mr Tang believed that with the full support of Hong Kong people and the efforts of all parties concerned, Hong Kong would be able to organise the best ever equestrian events. "In preparing the Equestrian Events, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Equestrian Company and all related organisations have tried their best to apply the concept of Green Olympics to various aspects of the Games."  He said.

The 200-day countdown ceremony endorsed the themes of Green Olympics, environmental protection and conservation.  The Club's environmental and conservational measures in its world-class Olympic equestrian venues were part of an exhibition on green Olympics and green lifestyle. The new vermicomposting project was demonstrated at the booth, with an exhibit explaining how the waste from the Olympic and racing stables was recycled into organic fertiliser.  Information on recycled materials, tree plantation and energy saving in the Olympic equestrian venues was also on display at the booth, while photo corners with the Club's Shetland ponies and the five Fuwa Olympic mascots were very popular among the visitors.

The Club's exhibition not only attracted great interest from the general public, but also among some of the officiating guests, including Chief Executive Officer of the Equestrian Company, W K Lam and Director of Home Affairs, Pamela Tan, and Club Stewards Simon Ip and Michael Lee. Everyone commented appreciatively on the green measures that the Club had adopted in the world class equestrian venues.
