9 January 2008

The "Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture" exhibition, showcasing outstanding works of city design, was officially opened today (9 January) by Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive The Hon Donald Tsang, Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen Ms Yan Xiaopei and Hong Kong Jockey Club Chairman Mr John C C Chan. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has donated HK$4.92 million to The Hong Kong Institute of Architects, The Hong Kong Institute of Planners and The Hong Kong Designers Association to co-organise the exhibition with the Shenzhen Planning Bureau.

This exhibition, and a sister event in Shenzhen, form the first twin-city architectural and urban design exhibition to be held in the region. The Shenzhen exhibition carrying the theme "City Re-fabricated" opened on 8 December 2007 and runs until 9 March 2008.

The Hong Kong exhibition, carrying the theme "Re-fabricating City", is being staged at the Central Police Station Compound and will run from now until 15 March 2008. Visitors will have a chance to appreciate some 80 exhibits including works by local and overseas exhibitors. An estimated 50,000 visitors are expected including professionals, students, tourists and the general public.

It is hoped that the "Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture" exhibition will elevate the public's perceptions of creativity and design, especially those of the younger generation, by giving local residents opportunity to appreciate architectural design and understand how architects make best use of a city's environment to maximise public space.

Mr Chan noted at today's ceremony that the Club had long supported the development of Hong Kong's creative industries and funded various innovative projects. "We hope this exhibition will stimulate the creative minds of Hong Kong residents and broaden the public's views on architecture, as well as enhancing the community's interest and concern for architecture, city planning and design," the Club Chairman said. "The exhibition will also serve as an exchange platform for the industry. All these positive aspects will help elevate Hong Kong's architectural and city planning standards and ultimately improve our quality of life."
