HKJC-funded Shaolin Wushu Centre helps promote wushu and traditional culture

6 September 2007

To support Hong Kong's cultural and sports development, The Hong Kong Jockey Club donated HK$18.94 million in 2005 to establish the city's first official Shaolin centre. The Hong Kong Shaolin Wushu Culture Centre, which will provide wushu training to local residents and overseas visitors, was officially opened today (6 September).

Located in picturesque Tai O, Lantau, The Hong Kong Shaolin Wushu Culture Centre is the first official Shaolin Centre in the city recognised by Henan Songshan Shaolin Temple. The Centre has a martial arts practice venue and camping facilities, offering different types of wushu training. Through practising Shaolin wushu and learning Shaolin Zen culture, participants can be trained to achieve a balance of body and mind, and learn to be well-disciplined, independent and co-operative. These elements are particularly important to the growth of young people.

Officiating at today's opening ceremony, Club Steward Mr Michael T H Lee said the Centre would become a popular destination on Lantau Island, attracting local and overseas tourists to practise Shaolin wushu and complementing other famous Lantau tourist spots such as Po Lin Monastery, the Tian Tan Buddha and Hong Kong Disneyland to promote Hong Kong's tourism.
