Club capitalises on Olympic opportunity to promote sports in Hong Kong

7 August 2007

The Hong Kong Jockey Club's Executive Director of Corporate Development, Kim Mak, told a press conference today (7 August) that all the Club-built competition and training venues for the 2008 Olympic equestrian events were now in use and the feedback from local and overseas equestrian riders had been strongly positive.

Mr Mak called on the entire community to join hands and make this once-in-a-lifetime event a huge success.  "For the Club's part, we will capitalise on this valuable opportunity to promote sports in Hong Kong as well as highlighting Hong Kong's 'can do' attitude and professionalism to the world's media," he said.  "We will also work closely with the Government and tourism industry to put Hong Kong on the map in the historic year ahead and invite visitors to come and see this dynamic and energetic city for themselves," he added.  "I hope all Hong Kong people will be proactive in being good hosts, especially our younger generation who are, in fact, our ambassadors to the world."

Mak said Hong Kong's staging of the Beijing 2008 Olympic equestrian events would help promote all types of sport in the city, especially enhancing the popularity of equestrian sports.  "As a not-for-profit organisation and Hong Kong's premier provider of sporting entertainment, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is strongly committed to the development of sports in the community.  Wherever possible, we have integrated the new competition venues into existing sports facilities and they will continue to be available for community use.  For example, the equestrian training facilities at the Penfold Park will be retained after the Olympic events.

"In recognition of our contribution in building the venues and also committing the support of our Equine Hospital, Racing Laboratory and other facilities during the Games Period, I am proud to report that BOCOG has awarded the Club the special designation of 'Outstanding Contributor, Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Equestrian Events'."

"The Club feels very honoured to be the venue provider for the equestrian events," Mak emphasised. "Not only have we been able to create the venues in record time - just 18 months in comparison with a normal Olympic cycle of up to seven years - but we are also delighted to hear overseas professionals telling us that these facilities are the most advanced in the history of Olympic equestrian events."
