Around 3,500 football fans witnessed Kitchee beat Eastern Long Lions 2 to 1 in an exciting match to win the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Cup 2017 at Mong Kok Stadium today (23 September). The tournament is the first title of this Hong Kong football season. The champion received prize money of HK$250,000, while Eastern Long Lions received HK$100,000. This is the fourth time that the Club has sponsored the event, which is organised by The Hong Kong Football Association.

One of highlights of the day was a pre-match exhibition game between mixed teams of jockeys and local football legends. Led by Champion Jockey Joao Moreira and renowned football commentator Peter Wong, the two teams - Joao & Friends and Peter & Friends – took part in the 35-minute game, which finished in a 1-1 draw then was won by Joao & Friends 2-1 on penalty kicks. Joining the game were other jockeys Neil Callan, Sam Clipperton, Derek Leung, Zac Purton, Umberto Rispoli and Karis Teetan. Participating football legends included local football stars Fan Chun Yip, Lee Kin Wo and Leslie Santos.

Another highlight was the first-ever HKJC Girls’ Junior Community Cup, aimed at providing girls with a chance to demonstrate their skills and talents. Today, Chelsea FC Soccer School (Hong Kong) beat Citizen 7-6 on penalty kicks, following a 1-1 draw, to take home the trophy.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Cup is a unique event that combines football with community engagement. The Club’s sponsorship covers prize money of HK$350,000 for the two teams competing today, as well as a sum of HK$300,000 to be shared among the other eight Hong Kong Premier League teams to promote local football development. In addition, the Club’s sponsorship also benefits society as a whole, with a portion of the sponsorship and part of net proceeds from the match being donated to charities chosen by the participating teams. This year, the two charities nominated by Kitchee and Eastern Long Lions were United Christian Hospital and Pok Oi Hospital, respectively.

The Club has been a long-time supporter of local football development. In particular, it has collaborated with Manchester United since 2012 on a number of programmes designed to develop the physical, mental and social capabilities of young people. These include the JC Elite Youth Football Camp, the JC School Football Development Scheme, the JC Youth Football Leadership Scheme, the JC Youth Football Fitness Assessment, the JC Youth Soccer Skills Challenge and the JC Youth Football Academy Summit.

The Club also supports the Jockey Club Youth Football Development Scheme, whose summer scheme is the largest such programme in Hong Kong. In 2015, the Club announced a HK$120 million donation to support the Jockey Club HKFA 5-Year Football Development Programme, which is aimed at promoting football across the community, including futsal and women’s football. In terms of infrastructure, the Club has supported the construction of the Jockey Club Kitchee Centre and the rebuilding of Hong Kong Stadium as a home for Hong Kong’s major domestic and international football games.
