11/21/2016

Today (21 November) saw the naming ceremony of the University of Chicago Center in Hong Kong. The construction costs for the Center, which will include The Hong Kong Jockey Club Chicago Booth Academic Complex and the preservation of a heritage site, will be partially financed by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It will be opened at Mount Davis in 2018.

Officiating guests at the ceremony included the Club’s Deputy Chairman Anthony W K Chow, Chief Secretary of the Hong Kong SAR Carrie Lam, President of the University of Chicago Dr Robert Zimmer and University Trustee Francis Yuen.

“As Hong Kong’s largest community benefactor, the Club has been a strong supporter of education for many years. The Club’s Charities Trust has in the past decade alone donated over HK$4.1 billion in this area,” Mr Chow said. “This includes many projects in the tertiary sector, and most recently collaborations with such internationally-recognised institutions as Oxford and Harvard Universities and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.”

The Club’s Social Impact Grant of HK$230 million will support the preservation of an important piece of Hong Kong heritage as well as making use of the University of Chicago’s expertise to nurture Hong Kong’s next generation of social entrepreneurs and NGO leaders through two major programmes:

  • The Hong Kong Jockey Club Heritage Preservation Project in the former Victoria Road Detention Centre, which is the Center’s campus, will enable the public to learn about these Grade 3 listed buildings and their context in Hong Kong’s history.  Displays and exhibitions will be organised in The Hong Kong Jockey Club The University of Chicago Heritage Courtyard and Interpretation Centre. There will also be regular guided tours.
  •

  • The Hong Kong Jockey Club Programme on Social Innovation will benefit over 4,600 NGO professionals, social entrepreneurs and philanthropists. Local NGO participants will be able to join the courses free or at a nominal fee, while 30 full-tuition EMBA and 120 non-degree short term scholarships will be granted to non-profit leaders. The programme’s unique features will include improving non-profit board governance and managerial capacity, building capacity for social entrepreneurs and NGO leaders, and impact focused research activities.
