11/19/2016

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Cup Guangzhou Final, finale of the LONGINES China Tour, took place today (19 November) with more than 30 international and Mainland riders participating. The competition was held at The Hong Kong Jockey Club International Equestrian Arena inside the Guangdong Huangcun Sports Training Centre.

Member of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Equestrian Team Kenneth Cheng competed in the Elite Class Competition, where the fences start at 1.30 metres, achieving a clear round to win the competition. His team mate Raena Leung placed fourth in the LONGINES Grand Prix, which was the biggest competition of the day, featuring 1.50 metre fences.

“Since its establishment in 2013, the LONGINES China Tour has flourished under the leadership of the Chinese Equestrian Association. It is an excellent example of how equestrian sport is fast developing in China. Last year, the Club was delighted to sign a strategic cooperation agreement with the CEA, initiating multi-area collaborations and supporting the long term development of equestrian sport,” said Club’s Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges at the opening ceremony.

This was the third consecutive year the Club has been the title sponsor of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Cup Guangzhou Final. Last year, the Club constructed an equestrian arena in Guangdong Huangcun Sports Training Centre, providing an international standard venue for the competition.  The arena was again the venue for the Hong Kong Jockey Club Cup Guangzhou Final this year.

The China Tour is organised by the Chinese Equestrian Association and this year  consisted of four legs held in Shanghai, Dalian, Beijing and Guangzhou. The HKJC Cup Guangzhou Final, sponsored by the Club, is a 3-star jumping competition accredited by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), with competitions being held at different levels.

The Club is a long-standing supporter of sports development. Since 1984, the Club has donated more than 1,000 retired racing thoroughbreds to sports teams in different provinces and cities. The Club also constructed the equestrian venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games, and provided the expert support services, and was honoured as the “Outstanding Contributor” for both events.  Since 2014, the Club has been co-operating with the General Administration of Sport to promote Community Fitness Programmes. The Club is also funding four sports parks in Guangdong Province.
