Club-sponsored rider Patrick Lam wins the China League and qualifies for World Cup Jumping Final

10/07/2016

Member of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Equestrian Team, Patrick Lam, delivered an excellent performance to win the final leg of the 2016 FEI World Cup Jumping China League in Beijing today (7 October).  Adding to this excellent result, Lam was also the overall champion of this year’s China League and has qualified for the 2017 FEI World Cup Jumping Final, one of the most prestigious 5-star indoor jumping competitions in the world, which will be staged in Omaha, USA from 27 March to 2 April next year.

Lam said that it was the Club’s support over the past eight years which had helped him achieve this good result. “The Club’s continuous support and sponsorship has enabled me to receive some of the best training which has enhanced my skills. I was also given the opportunity to compete with top riders in Europe which certainly enriched my experience. Without extensive support from the Club, I could not have done this by myself”, said Lam.

In addition to the support the Club provides to Lam as a member of The HKJC Equestrian Team, the Club also sponsored part of his competition expenses and horse leasing fees in the 2016 China League, helping him achieve outstanding results.

The Beijing final leg of the 2016 World Cup Jumping China League, featuring 1.5 meter fences, attracted more than 20 top riders from Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Mainland China. Lam achieved a clear round in the jump off in the competition, securing him first place in today’s final.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club is a strong supporter of local equestrian sports.  In working for the betterment of Hong Kong, the Club draws directly on its business design and sporting event management experience – in particular to develop equestrian sports.  In preparation for the equestrian events of the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which were held in Hong Kong, the Club provided HK$1.2 billion to fund the construction of competition venues.  It also managed their construction and provided all supporting logistics during the competition.  The Club subsequently assisted with the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games equestrian events.

Building on this success, the Club is now nurturing the talent of Hong Kong riders, through the development of the Equestrian Performance Plan in partnership with the Hong Kong Equestrian Federation. This world-wide programme supports elite athletes and horses and provides ongoing training and management. Several Club-supported riders have already achieved great success in international competitions.

Public enthusiasm for equestrian sports is fostered through the Club’s three public riding schools, which attract more than 60,000 visits a year, and through its sponsorship and logistical support for equestrian events like the 5-star Masters of Hong Kong.
