Jockey Club funds major upgrade of vocational training centre

12/17/2015

To provide people from all walks of life with an improved learning environment and better-equipped facilities to pursue continuing education, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated over HK$6 million to the United Labour Chi Hong Association for the renovation of its vocational skills training centre at To Kwa Wan.

Today (17 December), Club Steward Stephen Ip Shu Kwan joined Secretary for Education Eddie Ng, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung, Chairperson of the Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions Ng Wai-yee, Chairman of the United Labour Chi Hong Association Ko Wai-kong and Deputy Chairman Lee Wing-man to perform the opening ceremony of the new Ying Choi Jockey Club Education Centre.

Mr Ip said education was an essential element in promoting sustainable development in Hong Kong. “I hope all trainees can acquire the latest professional knowledge in this well-equipped education centre, which will enable them to unleash their full potential in making their career choices,” he commented.

The 1,200-square-metre Ying Choi Jockey Club Education Centre, which occupies the former premises of a vacant primary school, now includes a dance studio and additional recreational facilities. In addition, its beauty therapies workshop, mock-up massage room and multi-purpose hall have all been upgraded and its mock-up hotel bedroom and teaching kitchen fitted with the latest equipment.

This enhanced teaching and learning environment will allow the Centre to offer a wider variety of vocational training courses thus strengthening the competitiveness of Hong Kong’s labour force. It is expected that the number of trainees will increase gradually from the current 20,000 to about 30,000 in the next three years.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club
Founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is a world-class horse racing operator and Hong Kong’s largest community benefactor, as well as one of Asia’s most prestigious membership clubs. Operating as a not-for-profit organisation, the Club allocates its surplus funds for charitable and community projects. In 2014/15, its donations reached a record HK$3.87 billion, and in the last decade alone it supported over 1,300 projects. With about 70% of its revenue given back to society every year through donations and tax contributions, The Hong Kong Jockey Club delivers a significantly higher return to the community than any other racing and/or sports betting organisation in the world. As a socially responsible organisation, the Club helps Government combat illegal betting and advocates responsible gambling. The Club is also one of Hong Kong’s largest employers with over 24,000 full-time and part-time staff. Committed to global excellence and giving back to society, the Club is always “riding high together for a better future” with the people of Hong Kong.
