Jockey Club brings creative youngsters together for science and technology contest

Youths are creative and imaginative; the national science and innovation contest supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is a platform for showcasing their potential. Some 500 primary and secondary students and teachers from 31 provinces and regions, as well as 58 students from overseas participated in this annual contest which was concluded in Hong Kong today (23 August) with prize presentations.

Twenty-four local secondary school students and three teachers clinching the awards at the contest were also winners of the special The Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Technology Awards.  Jack Wong, a student from Shun Tak Fraternal Association Yung Yau College, won the China Association For Science and Technology President Award, First Class Award as well as the Gold Award of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Technology Awards with his “Mind FootPrint” project. 

The 30th China Adolescents Science and Technology Invention Contest (CASTIC) is sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with a donation of HK$9.55 million. The four-day contest was organised by the Hong Kong SAR Government and the China Association for Science and Technology, with the New Generation Cultural Association (HKNGA) as the commissioned organiser.

Presenting the prizes and awards at today’s closing ceremony were Club Steward The Hon Sir C K Chow, President of the National Committee of the China Association For Science and Technology Han Qide; Vice Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China Hao Ping; Deputy Director of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR Qiu Hong; Commissioner for Innovation & Technology Annie Choi and other guests.

Earlier, Club Steward The Hon Martin Liao joined HKSAR Chief Executive C Y Leung; Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Secretary of the China Association for Science and Technology Shang Yong; Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong Zhang Xiaoming; Deputy Director of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council Zhou Bo and other officiating guests to attend the national contest’s Opening Ceremony.

With the Club’s long-standing commitment to support youth development, channelling youth energy into social innovation is one of the strategic focuses in the coming three to five years. This contest is a good example to encourage young people to unleash their potential with creativity and innovation.

Apart from funding the contest, the Club also sponsored the special award The Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Technology Awards given to local students and teachers who demonstrated excellent results in dedicated areas, such as innovation, technology industry and science education.

CASTIC event is one of the world’s largest youth science and technology contests, which consist of exhibition and competition, is designed to provide a platform and opportunities for young people to showcase their creativity and imagination, other activities included innovation forum, seminars, and a sharing session with two Chinese astronauts. It also serves to train and encourage their innovative spirit and practical ability. Launched in 1982, the Contest is held annually in different locations including Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Tianjin, with Hong Kong hosting it for the second time after first being host city in 1998. Each year, nearly 15 million young people participate, with the top 500 selected to join the Contest.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club
