03/28/2015

As a staunch supporter of innovative youth activities, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is sponsoring the HKFYG Jockey Club Hong Kong International a cappella Festival for a fifth consecutive year in support of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG). Club Steward the Hon Sir C K Chow joined Secretary for Food and Health Dr Ko Wing-man, HKFYG President Mr Lester Huang and Executive Director Dr Rosanna Wong to officiate at the opening ceremony tonight (28 March) at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

Featuring local and overseas performers including SLIXS, EXIT, Jabberwocks, Rajaton, Hanjin Tan and the HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers, the month-long Festival runs from 16 March until 14 April. Other events include the 2015 International a cappella Extravaganza, a cappella Master Series: Rajaton, and The Hong Kong Melody Makers Concert - Dat’s Your Song. The overseas performers will also conduct workshops and perform for students in over 20 local secondary schools. More than 28,000 young people and the general public are expected to take part in the programmes. For more information, please visit: http://acappella.hkfyg.org.hk

A new feature introduced this year is a mobile a cappella stage that will enable both overseas and local a cappella groups to showcase this wonderful art form directly to the community through touring around various districts in the city from 23 to 25 March.

The Trust has been the major sponsor of this annual Festival since its inception in 2011, supporting ongoing a cappella activities and training programmes involving more than 110,000 participants from over 200 schools and universities. Participants competing in the annual a cappella singing contest have almost tripled over the past five years. As a result of the overwhelming responsethe Trust donated over HK$11 million to organise the annual Festival from 2015 to 2017. The Jockey Club a cappella Education Programme will also be broadened to cover not only singing techniques but also leadership, concert production and sound technology to further promote a cappella music.

Celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, the Club is extending its commitment to the development of young people by strategically focusing on ways to channel youth energy into social innovation. The Trust has been supporting the HKFYG for almost half a century, covering various projects on youth development, such as the HKFYG Jockey Club Sai Kung Outdoor Training Camp Extension, and the latest donation to the HKFYG covers an installation art exhibition and education programmes themed around Master Xu Beihong’s Galloping Horse, entitled “HKFYG Jockey Club Ten Thousand Galloping Horses United with One Heart”, which will take place next month.
