"Dancing Horse & Lions for a Prosperous Year" CNY float brings 130th anniversary joy to Hong Kong people

02/17/2015

The Hong Kong Jockey Club will join the annual International Chinese New Year Night Parade for the 20th consecutive year on the first day of the Chinese New Year (19 February). In celebration of its 130th anniversary, the Club has commissioned a float that features traditional Chinese lion heads and a sparkling horse. A Chinese New Year online game has also been launched as part of the celebrations. The Club wishes to share its anniversary joy of “Riding High Together” with the people of Hong Kong towards a better and brighter future for our city.

Carrying the theme of “Dancing Horse & Lions for a Prosperous Year”, the HKJC float is studded with magnificent hand-made Foshan lion heads, four of which are 1.5 metres in diameter.  These have been created by the famous Li workshop in Foshan, which has been crafting hand-made lion heads for over 100 years. The traditional lion heads on the HKJC float, along with a sparkling horse, symbolise the shared history of the Club and the people of Hong Kong.  Over the years, the Club has developed into a world-class horse racing organisation and Hong Kong’s premier charity and community benefactor; an achievement which Hong Kong people can take pride in.

To share the festive atmosphere of the parade, an online game is available to play on the Club’s 130th anniversary website 130.hkjc.com from now until 19 February. Prizes will be awarded to winning players.

Echoing the theme of this year’s float - “Dancing Horse & Lions for a Prosperous Year” - the Club has put together its largest-ever parade team comprising 50 dancing lions and over 100 performers. This includes a group of primary school students who have been trained in traditional lion dancing, and who will have a chance to showcase their talent in front of locals and tourists alike along the parade route.

The background music for the float is a new version of the Club’s 130th anniversary celebration song Progressing Together, which has been composed to express the Club’s wish to be “Riding High Together” towards a better and brighter future for Hong Kong.

To further share the Club’s anniversary joy, the Club will distribute 2,800 packets of 130th anniversary lai see envelopes during the parade.

Apprentice jockey Alvin Ng, winner of the Asian Young Guns Challenge, and Patrick Lam, HKJC Equestrian Team rider, who won a team show jumping bronze medal in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, will join the parade, helping to showcase the Club’s achievements in nurturing local talent and in promoting equestrian sport in Hong Kong.

Following the International Chinese New Year Night Parade will be the Chinese New Year Raceday at Sha Tin Racecourse* on the third day of the Chinese New Year (21 February).  The highlight will be the Triple Trio which will carry an estimated payout of HK$30 million**.  All racegoers will receive a mobile phone stand and an Instant Win card upon admission to the racecourse, the latter offering them the chance to win a 24K gold plated ornament***.

Racegoers can enjoy a grand opening show featuring singing stars Andy Hui, Ram Chiang and Rita Carpio as well as talks by a feng shui master Mak Ling Ling and a variety of other fun activities. The Club’s CNY float will also be exhibited as a special spot for photo taking.

*Racecourse entrants and those who bet must be aged 18 or above.

**The holder of a single $10 winning unit for the Triple Trio could take home as much as HK$30 million.

***The Instant Win card will be distributed until the start of Race 6 or while stocks last.
