Top performers at Jockey Club Elite Youth Football Camp to train at Manchester

07/25/2014

The graduation ceremony for the Jockey Club Elite Youth Football Camp was held today (25 July) after 68 of Hong Kong’s promising young players completed two weeks of training under coaches from the Manchester United Soccer School (MUSS). A boy and a girl selected as the two most outstanding players will receive a further week’s training at Manchester in England.

The Club’s Corporate Business Planning and Programme Management Director Scarlette Leung and Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) Academy Head Coach Xavi Bravo attended today’s graduation ceremony.

Ms Leung congratulated all the graduates who had completed the training. “The programme marks another step in systematically developing our Hong Kong football talents to their full potential – using worldwide best practices provided by a world leader in football,” she noted.

Wong Wai-yee, aged 14, the first girl graduate of the Jockey Club Elite Youth Football Camp, and Willis Tung, aged 12 are the best performers among this year’s participants. They will be given the opportunity of advancement by joining one week’s training at MUSS in England in mid-August.

Funded by an HK$11 million donation from the Club’s Charities Trust in 2012, the Jockey Club Elite Youth Football Camp is now in its third year. The Camp training not only brings world-class standards and long-lasting direct benefits to Hong Kong’s football community as a whole, but also promotes football amongst the city’s younger generation.

The Club has long been a staunch supporter of local football development, contributing over HK$170 million in recent years. Examples include funding the construction of the Jockey Club Kitchee Centre in Shek Mun, Sha Tin; supporting HKFA to organise the Jockey Club Youth Football Development Programme, and AFC U-14 Championship 2014-Qualifiers (Group H) Competition in Hong Kong.

The Club is collaborating with Manchester United to run other football-related programmes including the Jockey Club Youth Football Fitness Assessment and the Jockey Club School Football Development Scheme, aimed at bringing together overseas and local professionals in football training and sports science, to provide chances for young players to reach their full potential. Another initiative, the Jockey Club Youth Football Leadership Scheme is designed to boost young people’s organisational and leadership skills and nurture future young community leaders.
