Jockey Club helps Chu Hai College build new campus

06/26/2014

For the first time in its 65-year existence in Hong Kong, Chu Hai College of Higher Education (“College”) is to have its own purpose-built campus, with the help of a HK$200 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Located in Tuen Mun and due for completion in 2016, the new campus will allow the College to increase its annual student intake and enhance its teaching and learning facilities in line with implementation of the 3-3-4 education system.

Today (26 June), Club Chairman T. Brian Stevenson joined Permanent Secretary for Education Cherry Tse, Chairman of Board of Governors of Chu Hai College Dr Kong Ho-pak and President of Chu Hai College Dr Cheng Chung-nan to officiate at the foundation completion ceremony of the new campus cum naming ceremony of Jockey Club Academic Tower.

Mr Stevenson said he was excited to learn that the 65 percent increase in annual admissions would enable the College to help boost the provision of degree places from self-financing tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. “This promotes greater diversity in higher education and supports the city’s further development as a regional education hub, offering more choices and different education pathways to students.”

The College’s new campus comprises two major buildings on a 26,500-square-metre site, with the academic building named as the Jockey Club Academic Tower. The new campus will accommodate a full range of teaching, learning and recreational facilities, as well as student hostel and staff quarters, and is expected to benefit over 4,000 students directly each year by 2020.

The Jockey Club has always given high priority to supporting the development of local education. Over the past decade, over HK$3 billion has been donated for education development. The Club’s recent donations to self-financing tertiary institutions included close to HK$400 million for the construction of the Jubilee College located at the Jockey Club Campus at The Open University of Hong Kong, and the tentatively named HSMC Jockey Club Student Residence Halls at the Hang Seng Management College.
