ManU legend Dwight Yorke joins local school team for match under Jockey Club School Football Development Scheme

05/15/2014

Legendary former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke teamed up with Chief Executive Officer of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges and Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing today (15 May) in a visit to HKMA David Li Kwok Po College in Mong Kok, one of the local secondary schools participating in the Jockey Club School Football Development Scheme.  During the visit Yorke, a member of the team that achieved United’s famous Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup winning treble in 1999, showed he had lost none of his eye for goal when he joined the school team for a practice match.

Under the Jockey Club School Football Development Scheme, run by the Club in partnership with Manchester United, Hong Kong Head Coach of Manchester United Soccer School Christopher O’Brien has been stationed in Hong Kong since November last year to deliver a coaching education programme to participating schools, with a view to passing on professional football knowledge and bringing international coaching standards to youth football training in Hong Kong.

Another joint Club initiative with United is the Jockey Club Youth Football Fitness Assessment, which has enabled a football fitness database on the city’s youth players to be established for the first time, enhancing the overall standard of football training in Hong Kong. As a further step to helping those with talent achieve their full potential, the Club last month announced a third initiative in its successful collaboration with United, the Jockey Club Youth Football Leadership Scheme. Under this scheme, in which the Club is also partnered by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, football training and personality workshops are being organised to boost young people’s organisational and leadership skills, nurturing future community leaders.
