Community forum helps strengthen family support

04/11/2014

Harmonious societies are built upon loving family relationships. To strengthen traditional family values and help promote family health, happiness and harmony (3Hs), The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, in collaboration with the School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong, Family Council and Social Welfare Department today (11 April) held a Community Wisdom Forum under the auspices of “FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society”.

The Forum provided a platform for the community to share their experiences in supporting and strengthening families. Over 300 participants from Government departments and in the field of social service, health and education exchanged views on family intervention strategies, how to enhance family relationships and promote neighbourhood cohesion.

Club Steward Anthony W K Chow joined Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung, Chairman of the Council of The University of Hong Kong Dr Leong Che-hung, Chairman of the Family Council Professor Daniel Shek and Chairman of Kwun Tong District Council Bunny Chan to officiate at the opening ceremony of the Community Wisdom Forum.

Mr Chow noted the forum was of great significance, which marked the completion of the six-year territory-wide household survey, intervention projects and community-based activities to meet the needs of different sectors. “The response of the FAMILY project is encouraging, since its implementation, the number of beneficiaries reached 240,000 in 18 districts.”

FAMILY Project Principal Investigator Professor T H Lam revealed that family health is a holistic concept, covering physical and psychosocial health, and the two elements are complementary.

Community-wide events were held under the auspices of the FAMILY Project to provide an opportunity for fostering harmonious relationships among family members. Representatives of participated organisations also shared their experiences in the wisdom sharing session. Major programmes include “FAMILY: Boosting Positive Energy Programme” to minimise adaptation difficulties in Chinese new immigrants to Hong Kong; “Learning Families Project” to promote social support and neighbourhood cohesion; and “Enhancing Family Well-being Project” to strengthen family relationship and promote FAMILY 3Hs.

FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society is a citywide project launched by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with HK$250 million funding, in collaboration with the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong.  Researchers interviewed around 21,000 households for the study in 6 years with a view to identify the sources of family problems, devise suitable preventive measures and promote the “3Hs” through a citywide household survey, intervention projects and public education programmes.  Further details of FAMILY are available at www.family.org.hk.
