Jockey Club-funded dinosaur exhibition closes with record number of visitors

04/09/2014

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs exhibition at the Hong Kong Science Museum today (9 April) closed on a high note, attracting more than 770,000 visitors over five months.

The attendance has reached a 23-year high for thematic exhibitions held at the museum, established in 1991, and it was the most popular thematic exhibition held by any museum of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). The exhibition was funded by a HK$13 million donation from the Club’s Charities Trust.

As part of efforts to widen the exposure and knowledge of underprivileged children, the CARE@HKJC volunteer team accompanied around 2,000 kindergarten, primary and secondary school students from grassroots families to visit this dinosaur exhibition for free. Also participated were ethnic minority students and those with special needs. During the exhibition, dozens of local schools also applied for the Trust-funded transport subsidy scheme to allow more students, especially those in remote areas, to enjoy the show.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs exhibition showcased more than 190 precious fossils and exhibits, and it was the first time that such gigantic robotic dinosaurs were put on display outdoors in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Seriesisa three-year partnership between the Club’s Charities Trust and the LCSD to support two to three exhibitions each year, with an annual funding of HK$17 million. The previous exhibitions included The Wonders of Ancient Mesopotamia and The Splendours of Royal Costume: Qing Court Attire; as well as the Art Appreciation Programme of the Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal exhibition. Currently running is the Jockey Club Art Appreciation Programme for “Ju Ming - Sculpting the Living World".
