Jockey Club funds major upgrade of Blind Union headquarters

04/04/2014

The Hong Kong Blind Union head office has completed its first renovation in 17 years with a HK$4.28 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Club Steward Dr Eric Li Ka Cheung today (4 April) joined Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung and Blind Union President Chong Chan-yau to officiate at the opening ceremony of the Jockey Club Vocational and Educational Resources Centre.

Recognising the Union’s effort to improve the welfare of the visually impaired, Dr Li said, “We are pleased to play a part in renovating and upgrading the Jockey Club Vocational and Educational Resources Centre, which will provide a more pleasant and barrier-free environment for over 2,000 service users to learn, socialise and enjoy different kinds of services.”

First established in 1997, the 298-square-metre multi-service centre in Kwun Tong is the Union’s head office and an educational base that offers training in assistive technologies to people with impairment. Following the upgrade, it now has studios with audio recording and editing equipment where members can make webcasts. An additional activity room and a study room have also been set up.

Addressing the needs of people with disability is a key focus of the Trust’s donations. The Jockey Club’s support for the Blind Union, with a history of 50 years, dates from 1982, with some HK$13 million contributed towards various projects since then. One of the most recent initiatives is the Jockey Club E-learning for All Project, launched last year to help students with disabilities learn with the aid of electronic kits and develop new educational software for their use.
