Jockey Club helps bring floral displays to the city

03/07/2014

Supported by a donation of some HK$3.5 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Hong Kong Flower Show 2014 opened at Victoria Park today (7 March) in the presence of the Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So, the Chief Executive’s wife Regina Leung, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Raymond Young and Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Betty Fung.

As the major sponsor of the flower show, the Trust’s donation covers a Mosaiculture Display by Students, Student Drawing Competition, Flower Show Guided Tour and a transport subsidy scheme.  More than 3,000 students from 220 schools will be expressing their creativity using plants to form a picture or developing their artistic talent by drawing the flowers and plants on display. The transport subsidy scheme and guided tours will benefit some 34,000 elderly, students and underprivileged people.

Running for 10 days until 16 March, the Flower Show is themed on “Blossoms of Joy” and this year’s theme flower is Kalanchoe, which has a long flowering period and is easy to grow and propagate.  Visitors can appreciate a wide variety of potted plants, floral arrangements and landscape displays from local, Mainland and overseas producers, and also take part in floral workshops.  They can also have a better understanding on the Club’s green initiatives through its booths and display boards.  To foster awareness of the importance of environmental protection and greening, the remaining potted flowers will be sent to non-governmental organisations and schools after the Show for re-planting.
