MU legend Phil Neville cheers on local students in Club-funded football programme photo release

03/04/2014

Former Manchester United and England football star Phil Neville joined Chief Executive Officer of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges today (4 March) to cheer on football coaches and students of Nam Wah Catholic Secondary School at Sham Shui Po, one of the schools participating in the Jockey Club School Football Development Scheme.

To the great delight of the young footballers and teachers, Neville displayed his skill-silken skills when he and Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges did some warm-up exercises with the school teams and joined the short challenge matches together.

As a regular member of Manchester United's defence or midfield from 1995 to 2005, Neville was well known to the club's many fans in Hong Kong as one of their “seven little fortunes”, who also included his brother Gary, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.  After retiring from playing with Everton last year, Neville rejoined United as a coach this season.

As part of the Jockey Club’s partnership with Manchester United, Christopher O’Brien, Head Coach of Manchester United Soccer School, is currently stationed in Hong Kong to deliver a five-month coaching education programme to the football teams of the schools participating in The Jockey Club School Football Development Scheme. The scheme is aimed at bringing international coaching standards to youth football in Hong Kong.

Another joint Club initiative with United is the Jockey Club Youth Football Fitness Assessment, the results of which were unveiled in mid-January.  This will enable a football fitness database on the city's youth players to be established for the first time, helping local coaches optimise their training programmes and enhancing the overall standard of football training in Hong Kong.
