Jockey Club project to highlight history and culture in Tai Po and Fanling

12/18/2013

The cultural heritage of Tai Po and Fanling is to be promoted next year through the HKJC Heritage x Arts x Design Walk (H.A.D. Walk) Project, featuring a research study, exhibitions, workshops, guided tours and arts and crafts fairs. Today (18 December), the Jockey Club’s Executive Manager, Charities (Projects) Winnie Yip joined HULU Culture Executive Director Iman Fok and Project Director Simon Go in Lam Tsuen Wishing Square to announce details of the Project.

Noting that the Club has supported HULU Culture for four consecutive years in holding the H.A.D. Walk Project in various districts, Ms Yip said the new focus on Tai Po and Fanling would give people an insight on these two districts.  She hoped the Project could provide youngsters with an opportunity to learn more about their cultural legacy and actively participate in conserving and spreading the culture to the next generation.

Carrying the theme of “Our Home, Our Roots”, a 10,000-square-foot outdoor exhibition hall constructed of bamboo will be built in Lam Tsuen to showcase the heritage, culture, arts and crafts of Tai Po and Fanling.

In an effort to encourage local participation, the organisers earlier this year solicited works from artists in the Tai Po and Fanling communities, and organised a “Too Proud Workshop” for 100 tertiary institution students for them to create art pieces under the guidance of experienced designers.  Their artworks will be exhibited at Lam Tseun Wishing Square in Tai Po and Luen Wo Market in Fanling from 18 January to 9 March 2014.

Apart from these modern depictions, the exhibition will feature traditional customs, old shops and illustrations tracing the history of these two districts.  An old bazaar and farmers’ market will re-appear at an exhibition hall in Fanling, where the public will be able to experience the old way of life.  Some booths will be decorated as an old-fashioned barbershop, cinema and farmhouse to allow visitors to have a better understanding of the community culture and history. In previous years, the H.A.D. Walk Project has brought out the unique characteristics of Central & Western District, Sham Shui Po, Kwai Tsing and Tsuen Wan, helping foster public understanding of these districts and giving new life to their communities by preserving traditional cultures.
