Jockey Club gives elderly centre new lease of life

11/30/2013

Shek Kip Mei Estate today (30 November) welcomed the reopening of the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council (NAAC) Shamshuipo District Community Centre, following refurbishment funded by the Jockey Club Elderly Facilities Modernisation Scheme. The opening ceremony was attended by the Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So, Director of Social Welfare Carol Yip and NAAC Chairman Yip Tak-on.

Mr So said that Shamshuipo District Community Centre as one of the centres to benefit under the Jockey Club Elderly Facilities Modernisation Scheme, it provided not only a more spacious and comfortable environment, but also improved medical equipment and a gymnasium. Funding also covered computers with WiFi to enable the elderly to expand their social network with the use of the new technology.  He also said that the assistance from the Labour and Welfare Bureau and Social Welfare Department ensured the successful implementation of the Jockey Club Elderly Facilities Modernisation Scheme.

The Scheme utilises a supplementary HK$110 million fund to provide specialised equipment in elderly centres that are being upgraded under the government’s “Improvement Programme of Elderly Centres”, funded by HK$900 million from the Lotteries Fund. Under the Scheme, facilities in around 250 public elderly centres in Hong Kong will be upgraded in phases through to 2018. Ultimately, the upgrading will directly benefit some 200,000 users of the elderly centres, enabling them to engage more fully in community life.

Promoting positive ageing and fostering a positive community attitude towards senior citizens has always been one of the priority funding areas for the Club’s Charities Trust. Major examples include the CADENZA project that pioneers new approaches to elderly care by changing the mindset of the general public towards senior citizens through training and public education programmes; CADENZA Symposium for overseas and local experts to exchange new insights in the understanding of ageing issues; and the establishment of the Jockey Club CADENZA Hub in Tai Po, a one-stop integrated health and social care centre to help the elderly enjoy a happier and more independent life in the community.

In addition, the Jockey Club Charles Kao Brain Health Services provides outreach support for seniors across all 18 districts through preliminary checks on memory problems; and the Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing in Sha Tin offers care and support to dementia patients and their families.
