Jockey Club sponsors maestro to conduct local young musicians

10/28/2013

Some of Hong Kong’s most talented young musicians come under the baton of world-acclaimed conductor Lorin Maazel tonight (28 October) as they share the stage with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) in a concert at the Cultural Centre sponsored by the Jockey Club Keys to Music Education Programme.

The Programme is a three-year partnership with the HK Phil funded by the Club’s Charities Trust with a HK$6.39 million donation. One of the highlights is an annual concert in which world-class conductors guide and inspire local young instrumentalists as they share the stage with HK Phil musicians.

The Club’s Head of Charities Projects Rhoda Chan said the Trust’s partnership with HK Phil was in line with the Club’s strong focus on youth development. Expressing gratitude for the Maestro’s guidance, she said: “This will allow local young musical talents to come under his baton and perform side-by-side with the orchestra – a truly unique and rewarding experience for all of them.”

Fung Yat-shan, who plays clarinet at today’s performance, said he felt very honoured to share the stage with HK Phil and Maestro Lorin Maazel.  “It is one of the fabulous experiences of my clarinet career,” he said.  Violinist Kwok Shin-ching added that she was looking forward to learning how to play a piece well, not merely working on notes and dynamics, but to share the message of the music with the audience and to enjoy making music together.

The Jockey Club Keys to Music Education Programme promotes orchestral music and invests in Hong Kong’s musical future through purpose-designed concerts, ensemble visits to schools by HK Phil musicians, instrumental master classes led by HK Phil principal players, and teachers’ seminars. It has so far benefited almost 30,000 kindergarten-to-secondary school students, with priority given to special schools and schools with a high proportion of disadvantaged students.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is also the Exclusive Sponsor of the upcoming Lorin Maazel Fest in which the maestro will lead the HK Phil to perform two programmes, the “The Ring Without Words” and “War Requiem” on 1, 2 and 7 November.
