Club-sponsored rider wins bronze medal in World Cup Chinese League

10/20/2013

Kenneth Cheng, a member of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Equestrian Team, won a bronze medal in the third and final leg of the 2013 FEI World Cup Jumping Chinese League in Beijing today (20 Oct).

Amongst 26 riders from 5 nations and regions contesting in the third leg, featuring fences between 1.45 and 1.50 metres high, Cheng completed this International Equestrian Federation (FEI) two-star jumping competition with a clear round and entered the jump off competition. Finally he claimed third in today’s contest. Another Club-sponsored rider Raena Leung finished 16th in the final leg today.

With all three legs of this year’s Chinese League now completed, Cheng finished second in the overall ranking, just missing the chance to earn the single coveted "admission ticket" for the 2014 World Cup Jumping Final.

The FEI World Cup Jumping Chinese League, the only qualification competition of the World Cup Final for riders from Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Chinese Taipei and Korea, was first staged in China in 2011.  In the three years since then, Hong Kong riders have achieved excellent results, winning a total of 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

The Club has sponsored Hong Kong's senior and junior riders since 2008, and announced in August that it would inject a further HK$70 million to extend the sponsorship for 3½ years until December 2016. The annual funding of HK$20 million to HK$24 million makes possible the inclusion of new sponsorship elements and the engagement of professional expertise to enhance the standards of Hong Kong's equestrian teams and the sport itself. All Club-sponsored riders are receiving training and competition practice in Europe as full-time athletes in preparation for the 2014 Asian Games and other major international competitions.
