Jockey Club inspires youth creativity in combating drugs

08/28/2013

Talented students have joined the battle against drug abuse with their winning entry in an anti-drug video competition held as part of the youth development programme initiated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The video was premiered today (28 August) at the award presentation ceremony.

Known under the acronym for Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social programmes, PATHS to Adulthood: A Jockey Club Youth Enhancement Scheme launched the Drug Battle Anti-drug Promotional Video Competition in collaboration with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), the Government’s Narcotics Division and Wai Yin Association. Today (28 August), the Club's Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So joined Commissioner for Narcotics Erika Hui, PATHS Principal Investigator and Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) Chairman Professor Daniel Shek, Deputy Director of Broadcasting (Programmes) Tai Kin-man and Wai Yin Association Member Monica Chan to officiate at the ceremony.

Mr So said that since the launch of PATHS in 2005, assessment studies of participants had proven the project’s effectiveness in not only helping young people develop in a positive holistic way, but also in being better able to face challenges encountered along the road to adulthood. The PATHS Project team collaborated with RTHK, the Narcotics Division, ACAN and Wai Yin Association last year to produce the TV series Drug Battle 2012, and organise a range of preventive education programmes, including the anti-drug video competition and forums.  The TV series topped the list in the 2013 TV Programme Appreciation Index Survey (1st stage) conducted by the Public Opinion Programme of The University of Hong Kong.

The video competition, which was open to all local tertiary and secondary school students, required participants to produce a 30-second video to emphasise the serious health, legal, family and community consequences of drug abuse. The winning entry by Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Chai Wan) Business Administration students Cho Ka-wa, Ho Sze-hiu and Tang Wan-hei was selected from among over 200 entries and will be reproduced by RTHK to professional standard and used by the Government’s Narcotics Division for publicity purposes.

PATHS is run in collaboration with the Government’s Social Welfare Department, Education Bureau and five universities in Hong Kong.  The project is designed to help local junior secondary students explore their potential, establish self-identity, foster closer ties with others, and develop positive beliefs and clear values.  Further details of PATHS are available at www.paths.hk.
