Jockey Club funds TV series to promote anti-drug message

12/21/2012

A youth development programme initiated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to build resilience in students and help them avoid adolescent risk behaviour is being extended to a TV series promoting anti-drug messages.

Known under the acronym for Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social programmes, P.A.T.H.S. to Adulthood: A Jockey Club Youth Enhancement Scheme is following up its community-based programmes partnering NGOs across the city with an eight-episode TV series in collaboration with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), the Government’s Narcotics Division and Wai Yin Association. Details of the series were announced today (21 December) at a ceremony attended by Jockey Club Steward Anthony Chow, Commissioner for Narcotics Erika Hui, P.A.T.H.S. Principal Investigator Professor and Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) Chairman Daniel Shek, RTHK Assistant Director (TV & Corporate Businesses) Forever Sze, Wai Yin Association President Angie Chiu and other guests.

Noting that P.A.T.H.S. was initiated by the Club’s Charities Trust in 2005, Mr Chow said that under the leadership of Professor Shek, the project team had developed a sophisticated programme over the past seven years.  Assessment studies had proven the project’s effectiveness in helping young people develop in a positive holistic way, and being able to face challenges encountered along the road to adulthood.

“The Club is delighted to support P.A.T.H.S. in joining with RTHK, the Narcotics Division and Wai Yin Association to produce this TV series to enhance public awareness of drug abuse among the youth,” Mr Chow said.

Entitled Drug Battle 2012, the eight half-hour episodes will be broadcast on TVB Jade at 7pm every Tuesday from 25 December onwards, chronicling the reasons why young people take drugs and promoting anti-drug messages.  The programmes can also be viewed online on the RTHK website (http://tv.rthk.org.hk).

Running in tandem with the TV series will be a range of preventive education programmes to further enhance public awareness.  Students will be invited to participate in a discussion forum and express their views after viewing each episode, which will be recorded and broadcast next year.  An anti-drug promotional video competition and a summer programme will be also organised.  Further details of the TV series can be viewed at http://rthk.hk/drugbattle2013.

P.A.T.H.S. to Adulthood: A Jockey Club Youth Enhancement Scheme was launched in 2005 in collaboration with the Government’s Social Welfare Department, Education Bureau and five universities in Hong Kong.  The project is aimed at helping local junior secondary students explore their potential, establish self-identity, foster closer ties with others, and develop positive beliefs and clear values.  Further details of P.A.T.H.S. are available at www.paths.hk.
