Jockey Club helps showcase heritage of Kwai Tsing and Tsuen Wan through arts

12/15/2012

Following the success of the HKJC Heritage x Arts x Design Walk (H.A.D. Walk) Project held in Central & Western District and Sham Shui Po, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has further supported HULU Culture to launch a 12-month community programme in Kwai Tsing and Tsuen Wan.

Earlier this year, over 300 students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions joined workshops hosted by renowned artists, such as wood sculptor Wong Tin-yan and sand-painting artist Hoi Chiu, to create art pieces highlighting the characteristics of the districts.  They also visited several heritage spots to inspire their creativity.  Their endeavours, amounting to more than 100 artworks, are being exhibited from today (15 December) to 3 March 2013 at three venues – the plaza in Tsuen Wan Park, Sam Tung Uk Museum and Lo Wai Public School.

The exhibition was opened by the Club’s Executive Manager, Charities, Florine Tang, Under Secretary for Home Affairs Florence Hui, Leisure and Cultural Services Department Assistant Director Dr Louis Ng, Legislative Councillor Ben Chan, Tsuen Wan District Council Chairman Chan Iu-seng, Kwai Tsing District Vice-Chairman Law King-shing, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of The Hong Kong University Dr Roger Chan and HULU Culture Chairman Dr Ng Chun-hung.

Ms Tang told the audience that the Club’s three-year partnership with HULU Culture stemmed from their joint belief that conservation should include both tangible and intangible heritage.  The success of the pioneer project convinced the Club to extend the HKJC H.A.D. Walk Project to Kwai Tsing and Tsuen Wan.  The Club hoped the series of activities would give people an even better understanding of these two districts and the hundreds-year-old Hakka culture.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club H.A.D. Walk Project Tsuen Wan Kwai Tsing – Culture & Arts Fun Feast in Towns and Hakka Villages features depictions of city life, old villages and countryside within the districts.  At the main venue in Tsuen Wan Park, an outdoor Hakka-style exhibition hall made of bamboo is displaying art pieces created by local artists and students, featuring the uniqueness of the districts and their Hakka culture.

In addition, the public can experience the special characteristics of the districts first-hand by taking self-guided iTours using an app for smartphones and tablet computers. Other attractions include workshops, arts and crafts fairs, a Hakka a cappella concert and a carnival.  For details, please visit http://www.huluhk.org/.
