Club funds Art Appreciation Programme to help public enjoy Andy Warhol exhibition

12/15/2012

To give the public and special needs groups a better understanding of renowned American pop artist Andy Warhol, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has sponsored the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) to organise Art Appreciation Programme linked to the local exhibition of his works. The Programme includes associated lectures and sharing sessions, free guided tours, interactive games, and an art accessibility programme with special aid materials for the disabled.

Jointly presented by the LCSD and The Andy Warhol Museum, the exhibition will be open to the public from tomorrow to 31 March 2013.

The exhibition includes over 370 paintings, drawings, photographs and screen prints produced by Warhol. Visitors can also experience the artist’s evolving lifestyle through the Warhol Time Capsules, which he filled daily with souvenirs, letters, newspapers and magazines, business records, photographs, and other ephemera from his life.  Of particular interest is what Warhol collected during his visit to Hong Kong in 1982, to be found in Time Capsule 23.  There will also be screenings of Warhol’s films and videos to provide a comprehensive view of Warhol’s oeuvre.

In addition to covering the Andy Warhol art appreciation programme, the Trust’s HK$15.43 million donation to LCSD will support two upcoming exhibitions under The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series:  The Wonders of Ancient Mesopotamia and The Splendours of Imperial Costume: Qing Court Attire, which will be held at the Hong Kong Museum of History in late January and late July 2013 respectively.

As a staunch supporter of arts and culture, the Jockey Club has helped bring a number of hugely popular exhibitions to the public in recent years.  The most prominent are River of Wisdom - Animated Version of the Riverside Scene at Qing Ming Festival, PICASSO – Masterpieces from Musee National Picasso Paris, A Lofty Retreat from the Red Dust: The Secret Garden of Emperor Qianlong, as well as The Majesty of All Under Heaven: The Eternal Realm of China’s First Emperor which broke the attendance record for a thematic exhibition held at the Hong Kong Museum of History.
