Jockey Club funds Wheelchair Fencing World Cup

11/15/2012

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is supporting The Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (HKPC & SAPD) to host the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Hong Kong Jockey Club Wheelchair Fencing World Cup 2012 – Hong Kong.

Today (15 November), the Club’s Charities Manager, Teresa Hong joined Chief Leisure Manager (Sports Funding) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department Joanne Fu and HKPC & SAPD Hon Secretary Patrick Ng at the press conference for the World Cup.

Ms Hong said the Club was honoured to be the Principal Contributor of the Hong Kong tournament. “The Club supported HKPC & SAPD for the Wheelchair Fencing World Cup – Hong Kong in 1994,” she remarked. “Eighteen years later we are delighted to support the event again, especially as the Hong Kong Fencing Team achieved seven medals in the recent London Paralympics. We hope the fencers make use of home advantage to show their full potential and achieve good results again this time.”

Mr Ng thanked the Trust for its donation of HK$2.93 million for the World Cup and its support to a two-year Jockey Club Wheelchair Fencing Development Programme, allowing junior fencers more opportunities to compete in international competitions and gain valuable experience.

The World Cup will be held from 13 to 16 December at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre. The Hong Kong tournament will be the only wheelchair fencing world cup in the region and is one of the sanctioned ranking competitions for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. This is also the third international wheelchair fencing competition organised by the HKPC & SAPD after previous events in 1994 and 2006. About 100 athletes and team officials from over 10 countries and regions are expected to join the event. Admission is free for all visitors during the competition period. Over the years, the Club has supported sports development for both able-bodied and disabled athletes, partnering the HKPC & SAPD for more than 30 years to promote sports for the physically disabled and raise awareness among the community.  The Club’s support for local sports development has extended both to hardware, such as the Hong Kong Sports Institute and Hong Kong Stadium, and to software through funding many local sporting bodies.

The Club has also supported rehabilitation riding programmes and para-equestrian training for disabled riders since 1975, as well as funding the 2011 ITTF PTT Asian & Oceanic Table Tennis Regional Championships for the Disabled.  In addition, the Club was the Principal Contributor to the 3rd Asia & South Pacific Boccia Championships in 2009.
