Jockey Club helps set up first one-stop community health centre in Tin Shui Wai

11/01/2012

In a bid to enhance medical and primary healthcare services in Tin Shui Wai, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated HK$10.8 million to United Christian Nethersole Community Health Service (UCN) to set up a community health centre.  In providing residents with comprehensive health care services at affordable prices within the district, the centre will help relieve the current pressure on the public hospital in Yuen Long.

Today (1 November), Club Steward Dr Donald K T Li joined Permanent Secretary for Food and Health Richard Yuen, United Christian Medical Service Chairman of Board of Directors Professor Tam Sheung-wai, Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation Chairman of Board of Governors The Right Revd Thomas Soo and UCN Management Committee Chairman Dr Alice Yuk to officiate at the opening ceremony of the Centre.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Li noted that the Club shared the vision of UCN on the importance of primary healthcare, and had supported a number of similar projects across the city over the years. “The Club is delighted to work with United Christian Medical Service and UCN to establish the Centre which will provide quality medical services to an estimated 110,000 residents in Tin Shui Wai in the first three years.”

Located at Tin Ching Estate, the Jockey Club Tin Shui Wai Community Health Centre is the first one-stop primary healthcare service centre operated by a non-profit organisation in the district.  The Centre provides a wide range of services at affordable prices including family medicine, health checks, dental, Chinese medicine and diagnostic imaging.  It will not only offer better medical services to residents, but also provide substantial relief to the overburdened public hospital in Yuen Long.

The Trust has partnered UCN on various projects since 1985, injecting some HK$73 million of funding.  Examples include the launch of the Community Geriatric Health Maintenance Programme through its HKJC Community Project Grant, aiming to improve and maintain health of people aged 60 or above; and renovation of the Jockey Club Wo Lok Community Health Centre, offering primary healthcare and medical services to residents in Kwun Tong.
