Jockey Club spreads message of harmonious family life through innovative play

10/05/2012

A musical created by talented youngsters and their families premiered today (5 October) as part of a project to promote healthy family relationships, held under the auspices of “FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society”. The 3Hs Family Drama project, held in collaboration with The Hong Kong University’s School of Public Health and The Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA), aims to promote bonding and positive communication among school children and their parents, and bring family members together to build a healthier, happier and more harmonious family (Family 3Hs).

The Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So joined FAMILY Project Principal Investigator Prof T H Lam, the Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong Executive Committee Honorary Secretary David P.W. Yau and Family Council's Sub-committee on Family Education Convenor Prof Wong Po-choi to attend the musical premiere cum competition award presentation ceremony.

Mr So noted that since the Jockey Club launched the FAMILY initiative in 2008, the project team has collaborated with a number of organisations to spread the messages of harmonious family life. “We think it is important to be interactive and encourage family participation, therefore we are delighted to partner The Boys’ & Girls’ Association of Hong Kong on this FAMILY Drama Project. Through this interactive musical performance, we would like to promote positive messages on harmonious families. After today’s premiere, the musical will be brought to one hundred primary schools across the territory to further spread these messages,” he added.

The 3Hs Family Drama project was designed to generate involvement at all levels, with competitions for script-writing and lyric-writing centred on the themes of family health, happiness and harmony, as well as positive family communication. Each competition was divided into three entry categories: primary schoolchildren and families, secondary schoolchildren and families, and open division, with a range of awards on offer to encourage family participation.

Noted script-writer Ko Tin-lung and famous lyricist Cheng Kok-kong held separate workshops to offer helpful advice on techniques to participants. The most outstanding entries were subsequently combined into a musical play guided by famed stage actor Jim Chim. The musical will be staged at a hundred primary schools across the territory. It will also be filmed and recorded in DVD. Attached with a pamphlet, the DVD will be distributed to schools, students and parents who are not able to join the project as an effort to spread the positive family messages.

FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society is a citywide project launched by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with HK$250 million funding, in collaboration with the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong.  The project aims to identify the sources of family problems, devise suitable preventive measures and promote the “3Hs” through a citywide household survey, intervention projects and public education programmes.  Further details of FAMILY are available at www.family.org.hk.
