Terracotta warriors inspire innovative fashion show

07/26/2012

More than 170 young fashion designers from Hong Kong, the Mainland and Macau submitted creations for a competition using terracotta warriors of the Qin dynasty featured in a current exhibition as inspiration.

Today (26 July), the Club’s Executive Manager, Charities, Florine Tang joined the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) Deputy Director (Culture) Cynthia Liu, Hong Kong Polytechnic University President Professor Timothy Tong and Hong Kong Design Centre Executive Director Dr Edmund Lee to be the officiating guests. The winning works will be put on display at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre starting from next month.

The competition “Fashiona£į”±Terracotta Warriors Inspired Fashion Design Competition” is one of the four public art programmes related to “The Majesty of All Under Heaven: The Eternal Realm of China’s First Emperor” exhibition exclusively sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It was organised by the LCSD, the Hong Kong Design Centre and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Institute of Textiles and Clothing with the aim of cultivating the imagination and creativity of the new generation of fashion designers through designs using the ancient terracotta warriors as inspiration. A total of 19 entries have been shortlisted for the final and the first prize was scooped by Bonnie Cheng.

The other three programmes, all designed to inspire the creative thinking of students and the public, as well as to enhance their understanding of the ancient terracotta warriors are “The Terracotta Warrior Inspired Design-Animation & Video Design Competition”, “Discover Design 2012” and “The Terracotta Warrior Robots Workshop”.

“The Majesty of All Under Heaven: The Eternal Realm of China’s First Emperor” exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau with a donation of HK$15.4 million in celebration of the 15th Anniversary of the HKSAR. On display in the exhibition are 120 items of cultural relics from the pre-Qin period and Qin dynasty including 20 terracotta figures and rarely seen Qin dynasty jade and gold ornaments. About 40 per cent are Grade 1 relics. The exhibition at Hong Kong Museum of History is open to the public until 26 November. The Trust has donated more than HK$21 million to sponsor two highlight cultural events, along with another current exhibition covering the Secret Garden of Emperor Qianlong, being staged at the Museum of Art until 14 October.
