Jockey Club-funded life education centre celebrates 10th anniversary

06/30/2012

The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong today (30 June) celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the city’s first Life Education Centre set up in 2002 with support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to help spread the message to cherish life and encourage mutual care among people.

The Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So, joined Director of Social Welfare Patrick Nip and Chairman of the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong Wong Yao Wing to attend the 10th Anniversary Ceremony of Suicide Crisis Intervention Centre and Life Education Centre.

Apart from helping to set up this first life education centre in the city, including the operation cost for three years, the Trust has supported the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong’s work since 1975 with total donations amounting to HK$16 million. Through the years, citizens were benefited from various funded activities, including training for peer counselling and around 500 volunteers have been trained.

“We always place emphasis and highly appreciate the work of the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong and we share the same view on the association’s principle. Everyone should cherish their own precious lives. Throughout the years the association has helped spread the message to cherish life to every corner in the community,” Mr So said. “The Club is also very delighted to support the association to set up the Life Education Centre and to launch the Suicide Prevention Education Project, as preventive measures are very important.”

Currently, the Trust supports the Samaritan’s Suicide Prevention Education Project for another three years through its HKJC Community Project Grant. This project aims to strengthen people’s adversity quotient as well as their emotional and stress management skills through outreach talks and workshops, Life Ambassador volunteer training courses, the setting up of the Suicide Prevention Resources Library and publication of life education materials. It is hoped that the message to cherish life can be spread to every corner of the community.
