Jockey Club funds HKSAR Anniversary celebratory performance to set Guinness record

06/29/2012

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated HK$4.5 million to support The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) to stage a multimedia production “Our 15 Years – Youth Musical Performance” depicting major events that have occurred in the city since the handover.

About 8,000 young people will join various artistes in body percussion on 2 July at the Hong Kong Coliseum in a bid to break a Guinness Book of World Records.

Today (29 June), the Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So, Deputy Director of Broadcasting Tai Keen-man, The Dragon Foundation Director Shelley Lee, HKFYG Executive Director Dr Rosanna Wong and about 200 students attended the press conference for the performance and threw paper planes as a symbol to wish Hong Kong can fly to new heights.

Mr So said the Club was very concerned about the needs of the poor and hoped society could unite to make Hong Kong a more harmonious and loving place. He also wished the city could be filled with positive energy and continue to progress. Dr Wong thanked the Club for its donation and said the event was very special as all participants would take part in the dynamic performance together.

Percussion expert Dr Lung Heung Wing will lead about 8,000 local students to perform body percussion on “Zhong Guo Ren” and the theme from “Mission Impossible” in an attempt to break a Guinness Record for the “Largest Body Percussion Ensemble” by performing for over five minutes. The performance is to reflect the heartbeat of young people as they express their aspirations with the wider community of Hong Kong.

They will also join musician Chiu Tsang Hei, dancer Andy Wong, and various artistes to sing and recount major events in the past 15 years such as the economic crisis and SARS epidemic; global natural disasters like the Sichuan earthquake, South Asian and Japan tsunamis; Hong Kong’s freedom and historical customs and traditions. They also aim to bring out positive messages on how Hong Kong people have overcome their challenges and look towards the future.

The performance is one of the Trust-funded events to celebrate HKSAR’s 15th Anniversary. The Trust is also the sole sponsor of two major exhibitions by LCSD, “The Majesty of All Under Heaven: The Eternal Realm of China's First Emperor” and “A Lofty Retreat from the Red Dust: The Secret Garden of Emperor Qianlong”. In addition, the Club will stage The Hong Kong Reunification Cup and The 18 Districts Cup at Sha Tin Racecourse on 1 July, highlighting the way that horse racing brings together all sectors of the Hong Kong community, just as that historic date in 1997 reunited Hong Kong people with their compatriots.
