Jockey Club funds renovation of marriage counselling centre

06/14/2012

The Hong Kong Catholic Marriage Advisory Council (CMAC) has had its headquarters in Central renovated. Thanks to a HK$1.47 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. CMAC has played a significant role in promoting marriage mediation services as an alternative in settling disputes between divorcing couples through counselling, therapy and family life education. The upgrade allows the council to rearrange the layout of the premises so as to maximise their use, save on the cost of renting external venues, and conduct activities more conveniently.

Today (14 June) the Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So, Director of Social Welfare Patrick Nip and His Eminence Cardinal John Tong Hon officiated at the opening ceremony and open day of the renovated CMAC Headquarters cum Counselling and Training Centre.

Mr So noted: “The Jockey Club is delighted to have supported CMAC for over twenty years, we hope the launch of the Marriage Mediation Counselling Service Project can help more couples who are in need. This time, through our funding of the CMAC headquarters’ renovation, we hope the service can reach to more local citizens and families.”

The Trust-funded renovation works involved expansion of the function room with mobile partitions to accommodate larger groups for training, as well as sound-proofing measures installed in three therapy rooms to ensure the protection of privacy. This will be a boon to the council’s over 1,000 service clients and 1,000 professionals a year.

The Trust earlier supported the CMAC through its HKJC Community Project Grant to launch a Marriage Mediation Counselling Service Project. Through various mediation and counselling services, this service advocates the belief that divorce does not necessarily mean single parenthood to the children. It assists couples in the process of separation and divorce to reach a satisfactory resolution on different problems, aiming to minimise any possible impact to both parents and children.
